5 Desserts You Can't Miss in Morelia
/After trying the local savory food, you will probably think, this can’t get any better. But that it’s the best moment to try one of the local deserts:
Pasta Ice cream
This is a local dessert from the town of Patzcuaro (35 miles east from Morelia), but popular all over the state, this is thicker than normal ice cream, made with a lot of egg yolks (a lot!), whole milk, condensed milk, evaporated milk and honey. if you like Ice cream you need to try this at least once
Avocado ice cream and frozen popsicles
If you are like me, and think know that avocados are the best fruit in the entire world, this will blow your mind! This delicacy was born in the city of Uruapan (80 miles east from Morelia). Making a day trip and enjoy it there would be the best option, but if not, you can find it in different places around the city. The best-frozen popsicle brand by far is called Urani, they are on the expensive side, but worth every cent peso! The other brands are hit or miss.
Ate Moreliano
This local dessert is prepared with pulp extracted from different fruits (Quince and guava are the most traditional)and sugar. These can be enjoyed on their own but can be paired with wine and cheese. You can find it anywhere in the state, but here are two locations where you can find the best variety, and even see how they are prepared. A great audio tour I recommend take you to these two places (Wink, Wink)
Chongos zamoranos
This incredible dessert original from the city of Zamora, it’s the sweetest desert you will ever experience. This milk-based dessert has more sugar content than a normal human being can withstand, but if you are up to the challenge, you are going to enjoy it. These are one of those foods that you either love or hate. I personally love it… in small quantities.
Guava Atole
This a very traditional Mexican drink, very popular in central Mexico, but in my opinion, this beverage was mastered in Michoacan. The corn dough base drinks its available in different flavors, guava being the most popular for the contrast it provides. This is the best way to finish your meal, or it can be paired with other deserts like buñuelos.
This is only a small sample of iconic things you must try while visiting Morelia, but don’t forget to keep your eyes open for other great options, like buñuelos, churros, and a lot more!
