How to get there:

If you're planning a trip to Mexico, I'm here to help you pick the right airline to travel with. Once you've decided on the perfect time to go, the next step is to book your flights. For international travel, Cancun might be your only option, while for domestic travel, Tulum airport inagurated in December 2023 is also an option. just be aware, that some airlines also flight to Cozumel, however, please keep in mind that you'll need to take a ferry to get to Playa del Carmen.

Mexico has several flagship and low-cost airlines to choose from:

Aeromexico is a flagship airline that might be a bit more expensive, but it offers more international connections and is part of the SkyTeam alliance. With Aeromexico, you can expect good planes, service, and free soft drinks. In case cancellations or delays, you have more options to reach your destination. Aeromexico is like the Mexican version of Delta Airlines or Air France.

Volaris is a true low-cost airline where you pay for everything, including meals, snacks, drinks, seats, checked bags, and even water. To be honest, the seats can be uncomfortable, and the space between seats is one of the smallest in the industry. However, you can still get a good deal if you buy tickets during their regular sales, travel light, buy an emergency row or first-row seat, and know what to expect. Volaris is similar to Spirit Airlines in the US or EasyJet in Europe.

Viva Aerobus is similar to Volaris, but with two significant differences. Seats don't recline, and it's usually cheaper even when paying full price. Viva Aerobus is like Ryanair. However, just like Ryanair, things can go wrong if there are cancellations or delays, as they don't have many flights.

Lastly, Mexicana is a new goverment owned airline, its a spinoff of the famous mexican airline that went brank up in 2010. Their current routes are very limited, but they fly to Tulum airport, and its a step above of Volaris, if you their routes work, I recomend giving them a try!

It's recommended to fly with Aeromexico as your first choice, especially if you have frequent flying status with a SkyTeam airline (Delta, Air France, KLM, etc.). Volaris or Viva Aerobus are still great options if you get a great deal, are aware of all the fees you might incur, and don't mind being charged for everything. Mexicana with its limited routes, is a good option if the limited options are not an issue.

Have you flown with a Mexican airline before? If so, which one did you like the most? Don't worry; I'm here to help you with any questions you might have!
